When it comes to talk about Champagne in Derby Hotels, we have a special name: Pommery. We’ve been enjoying it for a long time now and we’re so happy to say that our clients love it! And it’s not just for the taste but for the story behind it that makes this Champagne unique.
Madame Pommery
The French Champagne house was founded in 1858 under the name of Pommery & Greno. But it was after Alexander Pommery’s death in 1960 when his widow, Louise Pommery assumed the control of the business.
Madame Pommery took the decision of making sparkling white champagne instead of the classic of the period, red wine. And she played an essential role in the development of modern champagne as we know it nowadays.
She decided to focus on the English markets, which has always been one of the most important regions for champagne. She knew they were developing a preference for drier wines and that’s when she decided to produce it. And soon, everyone became mesmerized by the crisp, dry style of her brut champagne.
Pommery’s Empire
After the huge success of the Champagne, Madame Pommery, decided to build a spectacular residence that has today more than 90.000 visitors a year.
The Gran Castle, is surrounded by astounding parks, lawns and flower beds. It also has a308 acrevineyard and a 116 step staircase through a caves carved in chalk labyrinth. Where you can find unique bottles of wine.
Madame Pommery made history on Champagne’s World and today, her name is honored on the top label “Cuvée Louise”, a traditional blend of Chardonnay and Pinot noir with grapes picked in selected grand cru vineyards.
